Chapter Nine
Thom sat there, dumbfounded. Was the man—dragon, whatever—for real?
“Do I find you attractive? Man, you’re like the sexiest, best-looking man I’ve ever seen. You’re a walking wet dream!”
“I don’t know what that means,” the dragon said, adorably confused. Thom didn’t hesitate to explain.
“It means that I find you extremely attractive, the most attractive man I’ve ever seen. I am aroused by you constantly and want to fuck you every moment I’m near you. Fucking is copulating,” he cleared.
“Okay,” the dragon simply said.
“Okay?” It was Thom’s turn to be confused. Ur couldn’t mean what Thom thought he meant, could he?
“Okay, let’s fuck or copulate, or whatever else you humans call it.”
“Have sex,” Thom said distractedly, then asked in disbelief, “You want to have sex with me?”
“Sure.” Ur shrugged. “It is something you enjoy and I want you to be happy with me. I need to take good care of you, my treasure, so that your inner light shines brightly. I saw it get brighter when you spoke about us fucking. I’ll do it,” the dragon said, and Thom couldn’t help but feel disappointed. What did he expect, that the dragon wanted him like he wanted Ur? Foolish of him. It was obvious the dragon was simply placating him. It was little more than pity.
The dragon frowned, watching him attentively from across the table.
“It’s gone now. Your light is dimmer again. Why?”
“I don’t know,” Thom said sadly. “I do not understand what you’re talking about. I never knew what you meant about my light. What light?”
“You mean you don’t see it?” Ur was truly surprised and it made Thomas even more confused.
“See what?”
“The inner light of objects and living beings,” the dragon stated. Thom shook his head. “You truly don’t see it?” the dragon asked as if he couldn’t believe it.
“No, humans don’t see inner lights.”
“Huh, you’re even weaker and more fragile than I thought. How do you know what’s worth keeping and what isn’t?”
“Um, we don’t? I’m not sure what you’re asking me here.” Thom felt like they were having two different conversations.
“Oh, right! I forgot you humans didn’t keep treasures. Still, to think you can’t see inner light…” He shook his head again. “How odd.”
Thom flinched. Way to make him feel inadequate.
“Some humans do gather treasures, but it’s mostly gold and precious gems. Oh, and pretty things like paintings, beautifully woven tapestries and such. But they decide what is worth keeping based on how extraordinary that thing is. They don’t see inner lights.”
“Right,” it seemed like the dragon couldn’t stop shaking his head, “that would explain these odd hoarding practices Ulr once told me about,” he said deep in thought, then shook himself out of it and concentrated on Thom again. “So you don’t know how precious your inner light is. You’ve got the prettiest, shiniest light I’ve ever seen, but it’s bleak and dull right now. I know if only I could figure out how, I could make it shine brightly like nothing else on earth. You’d be
